Germany: Ph.D Positions in “Energy Informatics”

The Technische Universität München (TUM) and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation are sponsoring the expansion of the energy informatics research group, which is embedded in a recently created research center. The research center is located at the Department of Computer Science at TUM. Energy informatics is a new research area within the computer science / information systems community that investigates information age approaches to managing energy in a sustainable way. This includes the design and evaluation of system components (algorithms, data structures, interfaces, etc.) that allow for controlling energy demand to reach two goals: reducing the overall energy consumption and making electricity demand follow renewable supply. Machine learning on streaming data to predict renewable supply and demand as well as optimization-based control of flexible demand are of particular interest to the group. Use cases include buildings, electric mobility, and data centers. We are looking for highly motivated graduate students who would like to pursue a Ph.D. in this area.

 Position Description:
• Time-limited Ph.D. positions
• Young and dynamic team at one of the leading universities in Germany
• Participation in research projects with international partners and industry worldwide
Candidates will work at the Technische Universität München (TUM), Department of Computer Science. Positions are time-limited with extensions depending on satisfactory research progress based on periodic performance reviews. TUM is an equal opportunity employer.

  Requirements for candidates:
• High academic qualification, in particular a Master’s degree in computer science, information systems, business informatics, electrical engineering, industrial engineering, mathematics, or related fields with very good overall grades
• Interest in energy management, smart grids, renewable energy, power system control, electricity markets, green computing, etc.
• Prior exposure to and experience in research on data management, distributed systems, optimization, stochastic modeling and simulation (a background in energy management and power systems is a plus)
• Interest in design and development of software systems, excellent programming skills in standard programming languages (Java, C++, Python, etc.)
• Knowledge of databases (e.g., MySQL)
• Knowledge of scientific software tools (R, Matlab, etc.)
• Interest in contributing to undergraduate and graduate-level teaching and supervision of Bachelors’ and Masters’ theses in the above listed fields
• Exceptional proficiency in English
• Very good English writing skills
• Committed, self-motivated, self-driven, and proactive team player with good communication and interpersonal skills
